December Tour of Asia with Canon

Asia tour

Po Chan and I will be leaving on a five-country tour of Asia with Canon in just a few days. If you are nearby, I hope to see you at one of the events. My father-in-law lives in Thailand, and it is one of my favorite places in the world. The life philosophy and stunningly beautiful architecture help fuel my creativity. I love all of the different cuisines and spices in the food. Lydia, my daughter Kyra, and son Myles will be meeting up in Thailand after the tour to spend the holidays with family. We are all so stoked to be there for over a month.

I will be talking about the new Canon 4K platform and showing clips from The Ticket, which we initially screened at NAB and shot on the Canon 1 DC. Camera etiquette, workflow, short cuts, tech talk, color correction and new rig systems that will increase your speed and accuracy in the field are all part of the presentation. We will cover how to use the unique qualities of these compact cameras, including the Canon C500 and 1DC, to best tell your stories.

Here is the schedule. Please click on the date for more information on how to attend. Some of the events are by invitation only. Hope to see you there!

Darn! Was just in Thailand for 3 months but now back in the US. Wish the dates would have lined up. Have you been to the movie theater at Siam Paragon mall in Bangkok? Their IMAX is awesome. Also a great place to get cheap tailor made suits haha. :)

Shane, hey REALLY looking forward to finally meeting you next week at your gig here in Singapore!!! You have been a big inspiration to me over the past two years and have helped given me the tools to launch out into video after being a photographer for the past two decades, the most recent result being our new photo-video website at that was just launched. I can’t thank you enough for your willingness to share what you are learning so that the rest of us can learn as well. I’ll see you at your presentation on Tuesday. Cheers, Alex

You should visit India as well. Lot of movies being produced today with DSLRs combined with cinema cameras.

Leon, that is the plan in the fall. I am going to reach out to the Canon peeps in Australia and get a tour going there. This was so successful for all involved.

Dave McVeigh, that sounds cool, yes Po Chan is meeting with the Canon peeps in Hong Kong to work on a Fall schedule that would include the Philippines.

Shane, was great to finally meet you at the Singapore gig yesterday!! You are just as enthusiastic and energetic in person as you are on your blog. If you’d be interested in ever doing a more in depth seminar here and elsewhere in Asia, I would think that you’d have quite a few takers from around the region. Too bad the NYU/Tish film school here in Singapore just went belly up or that would be a great place to host several days of seminars. For those of you in SE Asia, please come out and show your support for the other events that Shane and Po are attending in the next few days (details above). And, thanks again for inspiring the rest of us with knowledge as well as that creative kick in the pants that we all need every once in a while! Cheers, Alexander

Alexander Manton, it was so great meeting you and all of the passionate filmmakers along this tour. WOW, what a ride we had. Just landed in Singapore and now heading to join my family in Chiang Mai. Thank you for the kind words and I am working with Canon Singapore to bring me back for something like this. You need to help me spread the word and influence the team in Singapore. Thanks

Hello Shane I’m a major fan of your work! I’d love to know your thoughts on this: If you had to purchase one camera and use it for shorts, features, music videos, everything ect. , would you want the raw of a Red Epic or C500 package that depletes your budget with just the bare essentials to shoot (and everything else must be rented), or do you think the dynamic range of the 1DC would suffice? I’m looking at the 1dc with mark iii’s and BMC as complementary packages. Your work with the 1dc was jaw dropping. I guess my real question is, being passionate about the story and the cinematography of your work, what’s the one camera system you’d invest if you had to chose?

John Hall, this is a difficult question. Each camera system does something wonderful. But as a full package they do not do everything well. The Red is impressive with all it’s frame rates and RAW files but lacks vitality and good color space. The C500 has great color space, great frame rates, vitality but looks a little like video and requires an external recorder. The 1DC looks the most filmic but only shoots 4K at 23.98 and has all the pitfalls of a DSLR. All of them I would use to tell a story and that is what I am doing along with the Arri Alexa on Need for Speed. Using the best aspects of each camera’s digital emulsion is my new mantra. Never one camera. Rental is your best friend I hops this helps
