Shane Hurlbut, ASC gave the keynote speech, "Catch The Wave: How The Canon 5D Mark II Is A Game Changer For Student Films"
"Shane provided a stimulating, interactive discussion about the Canon 5D Mark II camera and how it changes the way student films are being made. Hurlbut refers to this camera as a "game changer" because of its versatility. Important features include: compact nature of the camera itself, lighter still lenses, image stabilizing ability, and flexibility to accent the action in new ways with increased depth and sharpness. Finally, there is an affordable camera for a student filmmaker with ability to deliver images that rival 35 mm film. Shooting with the Canon 5D Mark II prepares students to dive into the professional world of making movies with experience."

Explosions, beautiful bikini-clad girls, yachts and Navy SEALs. What else could a man want? If you are the DP, it starts with an equipment list to turn these elements into exciting footage. Shane Hurlbut, ASC, a native of Ithaca, N.Y., is helping to lead the charge into the convergence of the still- and video-camera worlds. For his latest project, his weapon of choice is the Canon EOS 5D Mark II DSLR camera, and he takes it where few movie cameras would dare venture. Hurlbut and his crew are among the first to use this hybrid camera for a studio motion picture, The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday (working title), which is due for release in September 2010.

One Cinematographer is breaking new ground with a hybrid HDSLR platform camera. Another has made his mark on both sides of the Atlantic, with recent stateside recognition coming for a Nike sport he shot that earned AICP honors in both the Cinematography and Production categories this year. A third DP is embarking on a new chapter in his career, which is already quite accomplished with such seminal music videos as Police's "Every Breath You Take" and Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" - not to mention assorted features and commercials. And a fourth has scored with the acclaimed Oasis Dig Out Your Soul In The Street mini-documentary, part of a campaign from BBH New York that won a GRANDY at the 2009 International ANDY Awards, as well as AICP Next's Integrated Campaign and Audience Award honors.

The vignettes were shot on two Canon 5D Mark II cameras in 1080/30p video mode with adaptors enabling the use of Nikon 24mm, 28mm, 35mm and 50mm lenses. Hurlbut also has mounts specially made to fit Panavision lenses on the Canons, but he wanted to use the smaller, lighter Nikon lenses for this shoot.
