Waiting for Lightning is the story of Danny Way, a young boy from a broken home in Vista, CA, whose passion for skateboarding would one day bring him and his creation, a ramp of prodigious and dangerous proportions, across many cultural and ideological boundaries to attempt the impossible: jump China’s Great Wall on a skateboard. It’s a film about how much abuse the body can sustain, how deep you have to dig to survive the betrayals of family, and how high and far dreams can fly.

We donated equipment to this documentary, which premiered at the 2012 South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin in March 2012.

In True Fashion

In True Fashion is a competition-based entrepreneurial program that builds self-esteem and work ethic in low-income students through hands-on participation and promotes the value of products “Made in the USA.” As a sponsor, Lydia Hurlbut was proud to promote the handbags they produce, wearing one at Sundance in 2011. Shane served as a mentor for the In True Fashion class, and we donated camera gear.

Secrets of the Sweat

“Secrets of the Sweat” is a series of short films about every day women who pursue health, happiness, and excellence. Each film profiles a different woman, with immersive action sequences that will make the viewer want to get up and get her running shoes on interspersed with down to earth and honest confessions from our subject’s greatest fears to her dearest hopes. Two of our employees shot the spec in May 2012, and we donated gear for the shoot.

Marley’s Pit Stop Rescue

Marley’s Pit Stop Rescue is a Los Angeles area dog rescue group and 501c charitable organization made up of volunteers dedicated to saving dogs of all kinds from unnecessary euthanasia and abuse. We were happy to donate gear for their documentary about animal rescue.

Branson Cares

When Joplin, Missouri was hit by tornadoes, Branson Cares came through with a concert and telethon to help raise funds. Hurlbut Visuals set them up with gear for the charity promo shoot.

Becoming Henry

The Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, the oldest Holocaust museum in the country, is the fiscal sponsor of the film Becoming Henry (formerly titled Bashert). A German immigrant is questioned during a cocktail party in Minnesota regarding his whereabouts during World War II…and discovers that the world can be a very small place. Becoming Henry is a short film based on the true story of Holocaust Survivor Henry Oertelt. Hurlbut Visuals donated office space and equipment to the project.

Lollipop Theater Network

The Lollipop Theater Network brings the magic of movies to children in the hospital with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. They provide a red carpet event and screen movies only available in theaters. We were happy to welcome them to the launch event of our Master Cinema Series to help recruit volunteers for the Lollipop Theater’s efforts.

Bottle School Project

Bottle School Project – A non-profit has figured out how to build much needed schools in Guatemala using discarded plastic bottles and turning them into construction materials. We are loaning cameras and lenses to film a mini-documentary on the project.
