HP LP2480zx Dream Color: Your Eyes Into the DSLR Colorspace

When I began working on “Act of Valor” I was using an Asus 17” monitor to light with. When I got into the color correction bay, I noticed that I had over-lit scenes because the monitor was not seeing what the camera was ultimately seeing.

In Praise of Dissent: Adobe CS5 Paves The Way

Dissent: Voicing opinions that conflict with those that are commonly accepted or officially espoused.

When my Elite Team and I started blazing this trail, we had already become dissenters. We embraced a technology that in Hollywood was a joke, a fad, not viable. This is one of the great…

Helmet Cams: Visceral, Intimate, and Emotional Connection with Your 5D

The first job that I ever shot with the Canon 5D was as Director and DP on a webisode series that Director of “Terminator Salvation” McG asked me to do. We produced these webisodes as part of the “Terminator Salvation” marketing campaign to be used…

Camera Checklist for HDSLRs

Here is a little instructional video from our Hurlbut Visuals HDSLR Bootcamp. A huge thanks to editor Chris Fenwick (Slice Editorial) for taking the time to cut this footage!

I have talked in the past about the power of the hybrid approach. Taking the best from still photography and the best from motion picture photography and colliding them….

When a Small Move Makes All the Difference: Kessler Crane’s CineSlider

When I started the 5 week Marine’s commercial two months ago, I knew we would be in wide open spaces as well as tight quarters on the Amphibious Assault Destroyer. The project required gear that was versatile, so I turned to Kessler Crane’s CineSlider. NAB was where I…

A Call-out to all Filmmaker Co-collaborators in Mexico

Wow, what a ride this last 18 months has been! I find myself at the fore front of a technology that I know in my heart will change the way we EVENTUALLY make movies in Hollywood, but what is so exciting is that this is not a Hollywood story.

Canon 5D MK II & The Video Village Challenge

At first glance with the Canon 5D you notice one thing, the minute you plug a mini HDMI cable or a 1/8” mini plug into the outputs on the camera, your LCD screen disappears. It is like a sick magic trick that for some reason, not one person can figure out.

The Canon 5D in Big Sky Country with the MARINES

I am on the road again directing for Bandito Brothers www.banditobrothers.com/ and loving it. As a filmmaker, I am taking advantage of this inspiring, creative tool (a 5D camera) while stretching the budget. Our goal is to show the influence of the Marines around the globe while…

Color Grading the 5D MKII for Case Combines

There have been so many great comments on the BTS of the Case Tractor commercial that I wanted to share the 30 second spot with you. I am always comparing the 5D to Reversal Film Stock because you have to get it close in camera.

Turning Still Cameras Into PL Mount Movie Makers

It seems like everyone is jumping on the PL mount 7D bandwagon and I have to say it is very unfortunate that the 5D does not have the same energy. All the specs on a PL mounted 5D have shown that the vignette is a big issue. Most cinema lens…

The Making of “The Last 3 Minutes”

When Shane told me he wanted to shoot behind the scenes footage of “The Last 3 Minutes” I was very excited as I had only used the 5D MKII for narrative work. I knew that using the 5D for run and gun style documentary work might be a challenge and loved the idea of diving in head first.

HurlBlog Technology Guru: Mike McCarthy Part I

I am Mike McCarthy, the Director of Technology at Bandito Brothers. I have been working with Bandito Brothers since the company started in 2006, and have been involved with projects using almost any format imaginable. (Film, SR, HDCam, XD, EX, P2, Red, Si2K, and DSLR among others) I work with many different hardware and software companies through their beta and development programs, to find the best solutions to the work flow problems presented by new formats and tools. I also document many of the solutions I come across on my own website hd4pc.com, and do occasional consulting work for companies that are trying to adapt their existing work flow to new tools and formats.

At Bandito Brothers, we have been working with Shane over the past year or so, to really push the Canon DSLR work flow to the limits. This is in regards to both visual quality and organizational efficiency, factors which are both critical to being able to scale the Canon DSLR video work flow up to larger projects. Hopefully the things we have learned from this process, and presented here, will be of benefit to others who are sure to find themselves in similar situations.
