Hurlbut Visuals is excited to introduce the Hurlbut Visuals Blog Interview Series.
Equipment
Chaos in Harmony by Kevin Anderson, Rental Manager at Hurlbut Visuals
Being the gatekeeper of the Hurlbut inventory, I see all types of gear come and go every week.
Final Days of KIN: Giving the Stag Horn Saloon Life, Texture, and Color: KINO FLO
It is so sad saying goodbye to Montreal. I love this amazing city. The crew was the [...]
Designing the Visual Landscape of "KIN"
When Stefan Ruzowitzky and I sat down to talk about the look and feel of this film he immediately showed me these Todd Hido shots. They blew my [...]
Zeiss: A Cinematic Journey on "Act of Valor"
When I started to prep “Act of Valor” in April of 2009, we were using Canon glass on the first 2 days of shooting. The hot girls on deck and the interrogation scene [...]
Redrock Micro: Battle Tested Rigs, Innovation at an Affordable Price
Every rig that I have in our Hurlbut Visuals HDSLR rental division is Redrock Micro. Why, when there are so many rigs out there to choose from? Brian Valente and I go way back – back to March 2009 in fact – right when this whole DSLR revolution was just getting started.
Lighting Series Number 4: Extending Dawn on the Practice Field in “DrumLine”
My phone rang on an evening in the late summer of 2000 while I was directing a Children’s Hospital commercial in Kansas City. It was Tim Bourne, a Hollywood Line Producer. He asked me if I had read the script he sent me a week ago.
HP LP2480zx Dream Color: Your Eyes Into the DSLR Colorspace
When I began working on “Act of Valor” I was using an Asus 17” monitor to light with. When I got into the color correction bay, I noticed that I had over-lit scenes because the monitor was not seeing what the camera was ultimately seeing.
Helmet Cams: Visceral, Intimate, and Emotional Connection with Your 5D
The first job that I ever shot with the Canon 5D was as Director and DP on a webisode series that Director of “Terminator Salvation” McG asked me to do. We produced these webisodes as part of the “Terminator Salvation” marketing campaign to be used…
Lighting: An inside look into "The Rat Pack"
21 months ago I never could have predicted the direction of my life. With the invention of the 5D camera, I started to understand that creating the look of “digital film” took an of the box thought process and my collective experience as a cinematographer. I did not anticipate how much I would enjoy sharing and giving back through teaching because…
When a Small Move Makes All the Difference: Kessler Crane’s CineSlider
When I started the 5 week Marine’s commercial two months ago, I knew we would be in wide open spaces as well as tight quarters on the Amphibious Assault Destroyer. The project required gear that was versatile, so I turned to Kessler Crane’s CineSlider. NAB was where I…
Leica R Mount Lenses for the Canon HDSLR’s
I started giving a Leica list out to individual colleagues and the request kept coming, so we decided to share it with everyone on the blog. These lenses are only R-Mount, they are the cream of the crop and through variest test we have found them to be excellent.
A Hybrid Shoot In America’s Heartland for Case Tractor
Three weeks ago I was selected as the director for a national commercial campaign for Case Tractors. It would be my first solo directing gig after signing with the Bandito Brothers one month ago. In the commercial world, an advertising agency is hired by the client, which…
The Making of The Carnival Sequence from “The Last 3 Minutes”
Episode III “Carnival” was on Day two of our four day shooting schedule. This day was a very ambitious one because we had four company moves. We started at the ranch house location, moved to meadow location, then on to the main street location for the street fight.
Turning Still Cameras Into PL Mount Movie Makers
It seems like everyone is jumping on the PL mount 7D bandwagon and I have to say it is very unfortunate that the 5D does not have the same energy. All the specs on a PL mounted 5D have shown that the vignette is a big issue. Most cinema lens…
Altering Lenses For Peak Performance
I have had many discussions about the different lens options other than Zeiss ZE’s and Canon’s that mount to the Canon cameras. Zeiss took it to the next level with their Canon mount CP2’s and their new Zooms that come out this summer.
The Making of The Janitor Sequence From “The Last 3 Minutes”
When Canon and Hurlbut Visuals teamed up on this joint venture, we wanted to put together a trilogy of Behind the Scenes videos where I narrated about what goes on inside my head as a cinematographer. We also wanted to show that even though there is a planning process…
The Making of “The Last 3 Minutes”
When Shane told me he wanted to shoot behind the scenes footage of “The Last 3 Minutes” I was very excited as I had only used the 5D MKII for narrative work. I knew that using the 5D for run and gun style documentary work might be a challenge and loved the idea of diving in head first.
"The Last 3 Minutes" Canon 5D 24p Firmware Shines
As the pressure from commercial production companies and the ad agencies started to inquire about needing 24p and that they could not deal with the rendering time of all the twixtor files, the 7D started to rise as the premium capture. That is when the aha moment happened for me. I thought, why is everyone asking for second best when the Canon 5D is king.
Keeping It Small
I have been doing research on other sites recently and checking out the monster camera configurations that people are creating. I question if that is the right path based on the two things attracted me to this camera; the filmic looking sensor and the size.
