Podcast on Selecting Cameras for Need for Speed

I return to the doddleTALKS Tech podcast on episode 17. We discuss the approach to selecting cameras for Need for Speed, and by testing those cameras, how we found that they each had their own unique digital emulsion. It’s about each camera’s unique abilities and how to use those abilities to your advantage. Part of the challenge on Need for Speed is also managing the process of shooting with eight or nine cameras at one time. Today (April 30), we are on day 21 of the film and love the Canon 4k camera systems.

Enjoy the podcast, and thank you to James DeRuvo at doddleNEWS.

  1. Awesome Podcast Shane !!! Lots of Info ! Would you consider Blackmagic Camera for any feature film in general ? Can it hold against big brothers ?

    • Aram Khachaturyan, I would shoot a indie on that, but the low ISO is my main complaint with this camera. I have been using ISO ranges on Need for Speed up to 4000 ISO, so I think this would be necessary on an indie.

  2. excellent podcast Shane. I love the points you really make in regards to all of these digital cameras being more like film stock options rather than an all in one tool. I wish more people (particularly online camera fanboys) would realize this and treat them as such rather than being radicals in regards to their chosen manufacturer. Looking forward to seeing the film on the big screen when all is said and done. Thanks for sharing so much information with us and keep up the great work.

  3. There we go, right comment on the right post…

This is a great podcast Mr Hurlbut. Very informative and very insightful. Your comments on DSLRs for Act of Valor convinced me to invest in a 5D mk3 last year and I have not regretted it.

It would be really cool if that test footage, any behind the scenes footage from those tests and your and the Director’s notes and feelings on each camera’s strengths and limitations in comparison to chemical film and as stand alone image capture devices could be assembled into an amazing feature length documentary that could exist as a more technical companion to a piece like Side by Side or something like a straight up feature film version of Zacuto’s Camera Shootout series.

I know I would love to hear your opinions comparing something like a RED to an Alexa or the recently announced BlackMagic Production Camera.

‘Digital Emulsion’ is a perfect title for this hypothetical documentary as well.
