Mathias Tegtmeier, thank you so much and it sounds like you are on your way. That is exactly how I started, one of the best ways to become a cinematographer. Kudos

Great article. It sounds like an amazing learning experience to be a Hurlbut Visuals intern.

I'm currently a gaffer trainee and was hired one month ago by the largest rental facility of lighting equipment and grip in Scandinavia, called Filmgear.

I moved to the capital of Denmark six months ago, not knowing whether I'd have any way of entering the film industry or not. After I had personally delivered my trainee application, and had two of their current trainess put in a good word for me, I called them every week to remind them of my application. It eventually paid off and now I'm working there full time.

The paycheck is very low and most of the time I will do the hard work of preparing, sending out and bringing in light equipment from various productions. I'm currently trying to learn everything there is to know about lighting equipment. In my spare time I practice light setups in a large studio Filmgear owns. It's nice that there isn't any limit to the gear I have at my disposal. All the best danish cinematographers and gaffers rent from Filmgear so there's also a good chance of making a lot of connections.

Fletch Murray, these are the specific comments that keeps Lydia and I as well as our team crankin'. Thank you so much for continuing to inspire us with these words. The fire will not die, innovation, education and creation will continue to grow and storytelling will be paramount. Our team is just getting warmed up.

Derek,
I don't think you guys (Shane's team and Shane and Lydia) realize what you do to keep filmmakers' passion alive. In a world were the dog eats the dog, filmmakers can often throw in the towel and just shoot whatever, for whoever will give 'em a check so they can pay the bills. But in this too dark landscape the Hurlbuts and their elite team hold the torch high. I can count on one hand the filmmakers who've spent time to keep the dream alive for those who haven't stepped up to the big show and experienced their film being shown. Don't ever let the fire go out. We love you and what goes around will come around. I hope it is soon for all of you over there at the greatest damn powerhouse of passionate filmmaking on earth, (last time I checked.)

Good to see Emerson College grads doing well. My father was a 1950s-era Emerson graduate and, after service in the Army, went on to a long career in academic theatre.

Hey Jade,

Thanks for the support. I think that calculated risks are necessary for growth, even if they don't always work out. Myself and the other interns definitely feel fortunate for the learning experiences we get, and the best stuff is here on the blog. Have a great a New Year.

Great stuff Derek!
I love it when you take risks to follow your passion.
Would totally love the opportunity to intern under Hurlbut Visuals.

Wishing you guys all the best all the way from New Zealand :)

Hi Darryl,

Thanks for the comment and suggestion. We do have some goo gone in fact, and it definitely comes in handy when cleaning cases.
