yup. I was a super close... 152nd place with a whopping 8 correct. Thanks for explaining your issues and why you used film. I was under the same impression, thinking film was rarely used but it was actually the main source for filming. Again, excellent video and congrats to the winners.. you guys really know what to look for

Like Shane said doing it in post is the only way.

A little trick is also to take some stills when shooting your scenes to give you more options when fixing shots in post. For example on my last project there was really bad moire on one side of an actor shirt so i grabbed a still from that scene, cut a little piece of the shirt in Photoshop and tracked it on top. Luckily for me the actor was not moving. No one will ever know and the shot was saved.

For wide establishing shots, streets and cities it's pretty important because of the bad aliasing on telephone poles cables and other sharp patterns. I made a tutorial explaining this technique, see it here:

http://vimeo.com/20003389

While i'm at it I also made another tutorial to help people converting their 8-bit footage to totally color correctable 10-Bit 4:2:2. It really works well and you can push your footage a lot harder in CC.

http://vimeo.com/19908622

Shane thank you so much for the filters(i won the 2d place of this contest) the footage i get from them is incredible. I retired my older non IR NDs from my fleet :)

Martin Beek, the Anit-Moire filters do not work at all, they just soften the image. What is your picture style? I have painted moire out in after effects on Act of Valor, it is the only solution to do it in post. Leica glass will help because of its flatter contrast range and not as sharp, more cream. If you have any sharpening on with your picture style you are increasing the problem. Neutral, -3 contrast, -1 saturation. I hope this helps

Shane. I'm a camerman from Holland that has spent his entire savings on the 5D plus lenses and gear to make a full length movie this year as DP. The DSLR approach was my idea and now the producer/director is not satisfied with any of the testfootage shot on location because of moire in the hair of actors. I have found no solution, and this is going to cost me more money or i'll lose the assignment altogether. Tried canon L-series and Zeiss primes. I'm a desperate man... :-(
I've been advised to spent a few hundred more on special soft filters AND to make a switch to the Panasonic GH2.
Any advise is much welcomed!!

Thanks.

Hmm, moiré is still a serious problem when shooting in the city (which I often do). Perhaps Canon can solve this problem before I buy the camera...

Ah moire', I didn't think of that one. Nice not to have to compromise a shot due to technical limitations. I need to rethink incorporating film back into my arsenal. Thanks for the insight.

Matt Short, yes the SLR's are an amazing tool, but the moire' issue killed us on this one. When I tech scouted the morning colors location in Parris Island the brick was such a tight pattern the whole building had this massive moire' wave across it. Same in Prague, the Marine's hat and shirt moire'ed like crazy and we had to go with this, we could not alter what a Marine wears. This is why I roll out with a Hybrid approach. At the Iwo Jima memorial I went with film on the technocrane because we had to do a quick leap frog to the crane and wanted to have it all ready to go to capture the perfect light.

Shane,
At first I thought you were throwing us a curve ball and nothing was shot using film. So that got me wondering - since the DSLRs are so versatile and can achieve this quality of imagery, why would you go through the hassle and expense of shooting film?

More film shots than we expected.
9th shot on 5D is a surprise and really shows what the Canon can, I think.
But of course it's every time the light that makes the final image (not the camera).
